Uncannily wise 11-year-old Drizzle lives in the town of Perfection. But Driz’s life is far from “perfect.” She and her brother Soot live in the town dump. One day, the exhausted Driz makes a wish for a “forever home,” unknowingly guiding a mysterious con-man to her town.
Veneficus is a travelling salesman on the run from his past. He journeys from town to town, selling new shadows to people unhappy with their existing reflection. Inevitably, these misfit shadows rise up, causing terrible chaos. But by the time that happens, Vennie is nowhere to be found. And always on his trail is the haunting, mysterious spectre: The Shadow Lord.
When Veneficus comes to Drizzle’s town, he is faced with a reckoning. Together, this fearful shadow-salesman and brave girl must make a perilous journey to The Shadow World where Driz is able to force Vennie into facing his own dark past and use his unusual magic to help reunite people with their true shadows.
Based on the novel by Ron Hansen, whose novel, The Assasination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, was made into a film starring Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck.
